Close Guantánamo

It is ironic that our government would condemn the Cuban government for alleged human-rights violations while we, the United States of America, have imprisoned scores of human beings for over a decade on occupied Cuban soil. They haven’t event had charges filed against them, much less had the benefit of a fair trial. The term “Judge not, lest ye be judged” comes to mind.

The Guantánamo prison is an affront to the decency of our nation. It serves no purpose other than to tarnish our image and to fuel hatred. President Obama is right. It should be closed for the good of our nation and the good of our conscience.

Human-rights violations should be condemned regardless of the perpetrator.
