  • Documentary Trailer: Elián

Just after dawn on Thanksgiving Day 1999, two South Florida fishermen rescued a 5-year-old boy from the Florida Straits. Thus began the saga of Elián González, who became caught up in a bitter international custody battle. Now, a documentary revisits the painful chapter in Cuban-American history. Elián, the film, mines hundreds of hours of archival news footage from both sides of the Florida Straits, as well as home videos, and interviews with key players.

The debate over whether Elián González should stay in Miami or be returned to his father in Cuba caused a deep rift in Miami. The boy, five years old in 1999, was found adrift at sea after his mother and other Cubans drowned while fleeing the island.

Cuba bids farewell to Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro's ashes were driven two miles through Santiago, Cuba on Sunday morning to Santa Ifigenia cemetery, where he was laid to rest. Raul Castro laid his brother's remains in a stone tomb marked with one word: "Fidel." Thousands of Cubans lined the streets to get a glimpse of the leader before the small burial service. His remains were laid to rest after nine days of mourning.
