European Parliament says report on support for Cuban dissident is fake

A spokesman at the European Parliament Tuesday flatly denied a report that the EP had approved a new measure supporting the demands of prominent Cuban government opponent Guillermo Fariñas -- a report that on Monday led to Fariñas’ halt of a 54-day hunger strike.

“Unfortunately, the news about an amendment voted yesterday by the European Parliament, is completely fake,” said Lucian Goleanu, press spokesman for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats bloc in the EP. “Alexander Lambsdorff, who is an ALDE (member) and vice-president of the European Parliament, never tabled an amendment in this case, so there is no document regarding this.”

“We are aware that the report was disseminated by a fraudulent (web) page that pretends to be from the European Parliament Information Office in Spain,” said Goleanu, who added that this comments represent the official position of the ALDE bloc.
