American Airlines posts worst on-time rate in June
American Airlines had the worst on-time rate of the major domestic airlines in June, according to a new government report.
The Fort Worth-based carrier had only 72.4 percent of its flights arrive on time during the busy summer travel month. U.S. airlines posted an overall on-time rate of 78 percent, up from 74.8 percent in June 2015, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics said.
Hawaiian Airlines had the best on-time rate with 91.1 percent. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines ranked ninth out of twelve airlines with an on-time rate of 74.3 percent.
ExpressJet had the highest rate of canceled flights, canceling 2.9 percent while Delta Air Lines had the lowest rate, canceling only 13 flights in the entire month.
Consumer complaints received by government dropped 27 percent to 1,492 complaints in June. Airlines also lost fewer bags as its mishandled baggage rate dropped to 2.82 reports per 1,000 passengers, down from 3.47 in June 2015.
There were five tarmac delays of more than three hours including a Spirit Airlines flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Denver that was delayed by 278 minutes after the flight was diverted to Colorado Springs due to thunderstorms.
