Good Time Charlie, a Skye Terrier, wins National Dog Show

OK, it’s not the Puppy Bowl – endless hours of big paw adorableness – but the National Dog Show, now in its 14th year, is firmly entrenched as the cutest counter programming to the traditional Thanksgiving football game.

This year’s Best in Show? A Skye Terrier named Good Time Charlie, who looks suspiciously like your drunk uncle: Big ears, long whiskers, and a sweet, goofy smile.

Although a veteran in the show ring, Charlie was the underdog to the other six finalists which included a Newfoundland, a Scottish Deerhound, a Bearded Collie, a Cocker Spaniel, a French Bulldog and a Smooth Chihuahua. Charlie won $4,000, a big trophy and an audience of 20 million who watched the two-hour broadcast on NBC while someone else cooked.

The competition, held in Pennsylvania, actually took place two weeks ago at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. It’s the Golden Globe of dog shows – not quite as prestigious as Westminster, but still a big deal and looks like a lot of fun.

This year’s show featured more than 170 breeds, including seven new breeds allowed to compete by the American Kennel Club: the Boerboel, the Spanish Water Dog, the Miniature American Shepherd, the Lagotto Romagnolo, the Berger Picard, the Cirneco dell'Etna, and the Bergamasco.
