Videos show terrifying commute through raging wildfire along L.A. freeway

A raging wildfire fueled by high winds created an amazing – and terrifying – sight for morning commuters Wednesday on Interstate 405 in Los Angeles.

“Today was scariest morning commute of my life,” wrote Rick Allen on Twitter with a video of the blaze.

Other commuters also posted frightening videos of the wildfire.

The blaze, named the Skirball Fire, erupted just before dawn Wednesday on the steep slopes of Sepulveda Pass through the Santa Monica Mountains, endangering multimillion dollar homes on the ridge tops as well as the world-renowned Getty Center art complex, which remained closed Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Los Angeles Police Department ordered mandatory evacuations and the California Department of Transportation closed Intereste 405 between Highway 101 and Interstate 10.

Estimated at 50 acres and fueled by 25 mph winds, the blaze was expected to grow, Los Angeles authorities told the newspaper.

In Ventura County, about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, a wildfire has burned more than 101 square miles and endangers 12,000 structures, reported The Associated Press. The Creek Fire north of downtown Los Angeles has burned 11,000 acres, while the smaller Rye Fire burned 7,000 acres.
