School Scene: West Hialeah Elementary hosts Authors’ Tea program
Principal Sharon Gonzalez and Media Specialist Roland Adames of West Hialeah Gardens Elementary School hosted Authors’ Tea, an appreciation event for young writers in first- to fifth grades.
Students invited their parents, read their writings, received gifts bags, earned a certificate and met Author Shane Dalton.
Student-authors included Daniela Calex, Dyllan Leon, Bruce Marichal, Andrew Chiu-Hung, Chantelle De la Torre, Alejandro Fernandez, Camila Garcia, Aysha Aghr, Natalie Celdeiro, Brandon Espinosa, Leah Tatum, Gisselle Calzado, Mileny Diaz, Camila Vasquez, Isabella Diaz and Yeniffer Porven.
SOUTH MIAMI MIDDLE SCHOOL
Students from The Power of One, a South Miami Middle School club, and South Miami police officers loaded up police cruisers on Jan. 29 at the school’s media center with 50 new blankets to donate to the homeless population.
The Power of One was established in October by a group of students in Roberto Rabelo’s yearbook and critical thinking class, and aims to spread kindness and positivity into the world.
In December, the club donated stuffed animals to the Miami-Dade school police as part of a domestic violence awareness campaign.

TERRA ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Jaime Danies of TERRA Environmental Research Institute was named a Questbridge Scholar and earned a full scholarship to Columbia University in New York.
Also, Nikki DeQuesada, Angelique Archer and Gregory Bolet were awarded full scholarships for being POSSE Scholars. Nikki will attend Pomona College in California; Angelique will attend Hamilton College in New York; and Gregory will attend Frank and Marshall College in Pennsylvania.
SCHOOL FOR ADVANCED STUDIES
Talia Lopez of the School for Advanced Studies received the 2016 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship and earned $1,000 towards her college education.
The scholarship program recognizes high school seniors for their commitment to community service, academic achievement and leadership skills.
