An SUV with a body inside was towed from a Southwest Miami-Dade canal Thursday afternoon after a water management crew spotted the vehicle while doing maintenance in the area, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez said a call came in at about 2 p.m. that there was what appeared to be a submerged car off U.S. 27, just south of Krome Avenue.

Sanchez said Miami-Dade police divers responded and reported that there were “possibly people inside.”

When the heavily damaged Honda Pilot was dragged out by the tow truck, one person was found inside. The SUV and the remains were taken to the medical examiner's office for review.
