Hialeah Gardens cop arrested for DUI
Angel Gonzalez, 51, a Hialeah Gardens police officer, was arrested for driving under the influence after he sideswiped an 18-wheeler on Dec. 15 in southwest Miami.
Gonzalez “had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, his eyes were glassy and his gait was unsteady,” police said.
A witness called 911 to report a man veering “in and out of lanes” and followed Gonzalez for about 30 blocks until he crashed his Nissan into a 2015 Freightliner near SW 137th Avenue and 135th Street.
When questioned by police, Gonzalez denied drinking “but stated that he took Xanax,” the report shows. He failed a roadside sobriety test, refused to take a breath alcohol test and was arrested for DUI.
Hialeah Police Chief Van Toth did not return calls Tuesday seeking comment on Gonzalez’s arrest.
