North Bay Village Commission members gave local developers the go-ahead Tuesday to work on design plans for a city baywalk on the north side of JFK Causeway.
The village has considered the construction of a baywalk near Treasure Island several times in the past five years, but plans never came to fruition.
To rouse plans, BDevelopment president Miguel Barbagallo has offered that the real estate company would fund the research with help from other local developers.
Town Manager Frank Rollason said the money would not go through the village, but the design concepts would become its property.
“I think it is a generous offer,” Vice Mayor Jorge Gonzalez said. “All we are doing right now is investigating. I don’t see any downside.”
The plans may then be presented to state agencies for preliminary approval to determine the project’s limitations.
Local developer Scott Greenwald, who has pledged support for the project, said the baywalk has the potential to stimulate local business and provide park space for residents.
“It would give residents the access to the water that they have all asked for,” Greenwald said at the meeting.
Commissioners voted unanimously to accept the donation.
