A Hialeah police sergeant was arrested over the weekend on charges of cocaine possession and carrying drug paraphernalia.
Tomas Muñoz, 41, was taken into custody Saturday following an internal investigation, according to department spokesman Carl Zogby.
Muñoz has been suspended and remained in jail pending a bond hearing.
Muñoz joined the Hialeah police in 1998. His most recent assignment was leading street patrol unit in Sector 1, a poverty-wracked area of southeast Hialeah.
A source said the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau had been checking out a series of unexcused absences by Muñoz that aroused his commanders’ suspicions.
"The arrest this morning is the culmination of an investigation that began several weeks ago," Zogby told El Nuevo Herald on Saturday.
Muñoz was taken into custody in Miami and that city’s police department assisted in the arrest, Zogby said.
