Man dies after falling into Doral canal early New Year’s Day

Miami-Dade police are investigating the death of a man who fell into a canal in Doral after leaving a New Year’s Eve gathering early Friday morning.

Police said the 27-year-old man, whose identity is being withheld until family is notified, was leaving the La Covacha nightclub, 10730 NW 25th St., at about 5:20 a.m. when he and a friend crossed the street and walked toward a nearby canal.

The two men approached the canal to urinate when the victim slipped, hit his head and fell into the water.

Miami-Dade and Doral police responded to the scene and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue divers initially attempted to find the body. When they were unsuccessful, Miami-Dade police divers arrived at about 7 a.m. and recovered the body.
