Institute of Contemporary Art breaks ground in Miami Design District
Less than a year after opening in temporary quarters in the Design District, the Institute of Contemporary Art - Miami broke ground on its permanent home on land donated by the Design District’s developers. On hand for Monday’s ceremony were new museum director Ellen Salpeter, artists Mark Handforth and Romero Britto, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Keon Hardemon and collectors Martin Z. Margulies and Norman Braman, whose wife Irma is leading the museum with Ray Ellen Yarkin. Created by former board members from the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, the ICA compromised with neighborhood residents following protests over a sculpture park. The privately funded museum, which focuses on cutting-edge contemporary art, expects to open in 2017.
