Georgia man dies after head-on crash with semi near Big Pine Key
A Georgia man died in a crash early Monday when the car he was driving and a tractor-trailer collided at mile marker 38 of U.S. 1 in the Lower Keys, the Florida Highway Patrol says.
The 42-year-old, who wasn’t named pending notification of next of kin, died after being airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center, the FHP said.
Troopers say that about 12:30 a.m., a 1999 Peterbilt tractor-trailer was being driven south by Eduardo Rodriguez, 43, of Marathon. At the same time, the Georgia man was heading north in a 2014 Toyota Corolla. The two collided head-on in the northbound lane for “an unknown reason at this time,” Trooper M. Villanueva reported.
U.S. 1 was shut down and reopened at 5:08 a.m., troopers said.
