Florida COVID update: 71,742 new cases added to toll as hospital patients increase

Florida reported 71,742 COVID-19 cases and six new deaths Tuesday, according to Wednesday’s report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

In all, Florida has recorded at least 4,878,524 confirmed COVID cases and 62,819 deaths.

In the past seven days, as the omicron version of the virus circulates, the state has added 40 deaths and 65,551 cases per day on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. This rolling seven-day case average is the highest it’s ever been — breaking a new record.

FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES

About 13,732,461 eligible Floridians — 63.9% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, MANATEE COUNTY

Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, per the CDC:

In Miami-Dade County, about 2,206,918 people, or 81.2% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.

In Broward County, about 1,335,195 people are fully vaccinated, or 68.4% of the county’s population.

In Palm Beach County, about 955,931 people are fully vaccinated, or 63.9% of the county’s population.

In Monroe County, about 55,809 people are fully vaccinated, or 75.2% of the county’s population.

In Manatee County, about 239,728 people are fully vaccinated, or 59.4% of the county’s population.

COVID-19 Hospitalizations in Florida

There were 11,378 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Wednesday report. This data is reported from 235 Florida hospitals. The number of people hospitalized across the state is 300 more than the day prior, when 236 hospitals reported.

COVID-19 patients take up 20.41% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 19.96% among Tuesday’s reporting hospitals.

Omicron, so far, is not as deadly as delta’s surge last summer. Hospitalizations are approaching records set during delta’s wave from July through September.

At delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 patients were hospitalized in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 1,439 were in intensive-care units, an increase of 72 from Tuesday. That represents about 22.69% of the state’s ICU beds, compared to 21.69% the previous day.

Wednesday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 2,132 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Tuesday, rising 77 from the previous day. Of the 356 new COVID patients, 267 (75%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 294, increasing by 21 from a day earlier.

Broward County’s Wednesday report said there were 1,398 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, a jump of 18 compared to the day before.
