Why they’re in the Food 50: A life change and a cross-country road trip led Frank and Marti Reich to open an oasis in pie-deprived South Florida. Their mom-and-pop operation, The Good Pie Company in Davie, crafts sweet (pecan, cherry, apple crumb) and savory (butternut squash-gouda, corned beef-sauerkraut, vegetable potpie) individual-size pies made with all natural ingredients and no preservatives. He does the sweets, she makes the savories. The two met in elementary school in Miami Beach, became friends and later married. They turned Frank’s pie-baking hobby into a business when they both lost their high-stress jobs — he was an electronics manufacturer and trucker, and she was a nurse. They went on a cross-country trip to learn about pie and how to market it, and the rest is history.
Marti Reich says: “The idea is to go back to basics. A pie made with fresh, natural ingredients is such a better quality, and more and more people want real food, not processed.”
