Exhibitions, fundraiser mark the week in South Florida’s art world
The week ahead in South Florida’s visual arts world brings a solo show from an environmentally conscious artist at the Bakhouse, a Pinecrest Gardens exhibition exploring the tropics through art, an artistic celebration at the Deering Estate at Cutler, a fancy fundraiser for Locust Projects and some out-of-the-box temporary contemporary art courtesy of the Bass Museum.
▪ German-born, Miami-based artist Joana Fischer finds inspiration for her work in the plastic pollution of the environment. In Zeitgeist, her new solo show at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood, synthetic and translucent materials are illuminated from within with LED lights to provoke thoughts of over-consumption. ▪ Torrid Flora, an exhibition exploring the tropics through artworks by Jennifer Basile, Xavier Cortada, Sarah Henderson, Deborah Mitchell and Tina Salvesen, opens April 12 with a special reception from noon to 6 p.m. in the Hibiscus Room at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 S. Red Rd., Miami. Curator Ananda DeMello of Art Habit channels Aristotle and his study of climate zones, an effort in which he rated weather conditions around the world from frigid to temperate to torrid, to express a need for local preservation efforts. ▪ Deering Estate at Cutler presents the Deering Estate Festival of the Arts Plus One Exhibition in which leading curators, gallerists and working artists from South Florida collaborate to create site-specific works and performances along with tours, a literary lounge, a fire circle poetry forum and interactive activities for all ages. ▪ Locust Projects’ annual Spring Fling fundraiser is April 11 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the 1111 Building, 1111 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach. ▪ The Bass Museum of Art’s latest addition to its series tc: temporary contemporary is installed in the storefront windows of the Walgreen's located at the corner of Collins Avenue and 23rd Street on Miami Beach. Visual and performance artist Reed van Brunschot collaborated with painter Francisca Twiggs using set design and analog stage tricks, everyday objects and shoreline debris to make up a narrative that depicts the fragility of Miami Beach as a result of global warming. Since the Bass Museum and the City of Miami Beach launched the tc program in 2012, more than 45 sculptures, murals, videos and sound installations have graced the park and the neighborhood adjacent to the Bass, 2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. www.bassmuseum.org.
