‘Vulture’ Mike Dunn piling up relief wins for Miami Marlins

As reporters gathered around Mike Dunn on Friday to talk to the pitcher about breaking the Marlins’ record for victories by a reliever with 10, Jeff Baker called out across the clubhouse, “Did he vulture another one?”

“Vulture” is the nickname given to Dunn by his teammates for earning so many relief victories.

He is not the first reliever to wear that moniker.

Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers nicknamed reliever Phil Regan the “vulture” after he won 14 games in 1966 for Los Angeles.

“I never realize he gets a win until I walk in and I see him smiling,” fellow reliever Dan Jennings said. “And I say, ‘You got to be kidding me?’ It’s crazy. I don’t have any wins this year, so that puts it in perspective. That guy’s got 10 this year. Ridiculous. Right place, right time.”

Roy Face holds the major-league record for relief wins with 18 in 1959 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“It doesn’t matter [who gets the win], as long as it’s somebody on this team,” Dunn said. “I’d gladly give up all the wins to any of the starters for holds and stuff like that.”

Dunn has 18 career relief wins for the Marlins, two shy of Robb Nen’s team record.

• With their 5-4 victory on Thursday night, the Marlins took over the major-league lead in walk-off victories with 10 and one-run wins with 30.

“That’s the best feeling in baseball is to have a win like that,” said manager Mike Redmond, who recalls having only two walk-off hits during his playing career, none with the Marlins.
