Heritage star cornerbacks lead loaded 2018 recruiting class in Broward, Miami-Dade

The high school football season is upon us this week with dozens of preseason kickoff classic games and now seems like the perfect time to debut the Miami Herald’s recruiting rankings.

With eight nationally ranked teams in the area, it’s only natural those same schools have most of the players on this list.

Here’s a closer look at the top 50 football recruits in the Class of 2018 in Miami-Dade and Broward counties followed by another 70 seniors to watch:

1. Patrick Surtain Jr., CB, 6-2, 181, American Heritage

The book: Rated a 5-star recruit in 247Sports composite rankings and ranks fourth nationally regardless of position as of Aug. 14. The U.S. Army All-American is the second-ranked player in the state behind IMG Academy’s Xavier Thomas. 247Sports gives LSU a heavy edge over Florida State to get Surtain’s commitment. Surtain’s father, Patrick Sr., is a former Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl cornerback who was born and raised in Louisiana.

2. Tyson Campbell, CB, 6-2 1/2, 180, American Heritage

The book: Recently promoted to a 5-star recruit according to 247Sports and tabbed the 20th best player in the country regardless of position and third-best cornerback as of Aug. 7. He’s rated the third-best player in the state regardless of position. According to 247Sports Crystal Ball, this is a Miami-Ohio State battle with Alabama, Clemson and LSU giving chase.

3. James Cook, RB, 5-11 1/2, 181, Central

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 33rd best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7. The U.S. Army All-American is listed as the third-best running back in the country and the fifth-best player in the state regardless of position. Cook was a Florida State commitment until he decommitted on July 4. Georgia is now said to be his leader.

4. Mark Pope, WR, 6-1, 175, Southridge (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 82nd best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 72. The U.S. Army All-American is rated the 16th best receiver in the country and 16th best player regardless of position in the state. He’s been a University of Miami commitment since March 27. He had 37 catches for 619 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior on a state championship team.

5. Al Blades Jr., CB, 6-0, 170, St. Thomas Aquinas (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 92nd best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7. The U.S. Army All-American is rated the 14th best cornerback in the country regardless and 18th best player in the state regardless of position. He became a University of Miami commitment for the second time on June 18.

6. Asante Samuel, CB, 5-9 1/2, 166, St. Thomas Aquinas (FSU commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 95th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7. A Florida State commitment since April 13, Samuel Jr. is rated the 13th best cornerback in the country and 19th best player in the state regardless of position.

7. Xavier Williams, WR, 6-0 1/2, 190, Chaminade-Madonna (Alabama commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 97th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7. He’s rated the 20th best player in the state. An Alabama commitment since Jan. 17. He also has offers from Auburn and Nebraska.

8. Kevin Austin, WR, 6-3, 198, North Broward Prep (Notre Dame commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 110th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7. He’s rated the 25th best player in the state. Committed to Notre Dame last Friday.

9. Anthony Schwartz, WR, 6-0, 172, American Heritage

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 143rd best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7. According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Florida is a heavy favorite to land Schwartz’s signature on National Signing Day. One of the country’s fastest sprinters, Schwartz also has offers from Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee.

10. Gilbert Frierson, CB, 6-1, 185, Coral Gables (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 146th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 3. Rated the 31st best player in the state. A University of Miami commitment since Feb. 23, 2016.

11. Nik Bonitto, OLB, 6-2 1/2, 204, St. Thomas Aquinas

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 169th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 3. According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Louisville is a heavy favorite to sign Bonitto. He also has offers from Alabama and Oklahoma among others.

12. Cam’ron Davis, RB, 5-9 1/2, 190, Carol City (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 179th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 3. Rated 34th best player in the state. A University of Miami commitment since Feb. 18.

13. Elijah Moore, WR, 5-11, 170, St. Thomas Aquinas (Georgia commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 188th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 3. Rated 37th best player in the state. Chose Georgia over Ole Miss on Aug. 15.

14. Nesta Silvera, DT, 6-2, 308, American Heritage (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 218th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 3. Rated 43rd best player in the state. A University of Miami commitment since Valentine’s Day.

15. Nadab Joseph, CB, 6-1 1/2, 180, Norland

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 226nd best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 3. Rated 44th best player in the state. Former LSU commitment and now Alabama is considered the heavy favorite.

16. Andrew Chatfield, DE, 6-2, 221, American Heritage

The book: Rated a 4-star recruit and the 299th best player in the country regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 3. Former Ohio State commitment who recently reopened his recruitment. The Florida Gators are now considered a heavy favorite. He also has offers from LSU and Oklahoma.

17. Trenell Troutman, S, 5-10, 188, St. Thomas Aquinas (Louisville commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 54th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been a Louisville commitment since July 9, 2016.

18. Daquris Wiggins, WR, 6-2, 180, Southridge (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 55th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been a University of Miami commitment since Oct. 21, 2015.

19. Shaun Shivers, RB, 5-7, 169, Chaminade-Madonna (Auburn commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recuit and the 56th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been an Auburn commitment since Oct. 26, 2016. He also has an offer from Utah.

20. Kayode Oladele, DE, 6-4, 235, Champagnat

The book: Rated a 3-star recuit and the 58th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. A former Florida State commitment, Oladele lists the Seminoles, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi as his top five.

21. Robert Hicks, DE, 6-0, 237, Central (Louisville commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 63rd best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been a Louisville commitment since the Fourth of July.

22. Delone Scaife, OG, 6-3, 305, Southridge (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 64th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. A University of Miami commitment since July 9, 2016.

23. Divaad Wilson, CB, 6-0, 180, Northwestern (Florida commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 67th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. A Florida commitment since Feb. 3, 2017.

24. Dominick Watt, WR, 6-1, 200, Miramar

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 68th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. The former McArthur standout is said to be a heavy Kentucky lean. He also has offers from FIU, Tennessee, Cincinnati and UCF.

25. Chandler Jones, CB, 5-10, 173, Central (Louisville commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 72nd best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. A Lousiville commitment since July 27.

26. Miguel Edwards, CB, 6-0, 164, Deerfield Beach (Oklahoma commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 73rd best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. An Oklahoma commitment since April 28. Also has offers from Kentucky and Ole Miss.

27. Rosendo Louis, ILB, 6-1, 225, Deerfield Beach (FSU commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 74th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. Chose Florida State over Miami and South Carolina when he announced his college choice on Aug. 15.

28. Stanley Garner, CB, 6-3, 180, Dillard

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 75th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. Will announce his commitment on Aug. 16. It’s expected to be Kentucky.

29. Gregory Rousseau, DE, 6-6, 205, Champagnat (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 76th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been a University of Miami commitment since April 22.

30. D.J. Ivey, CB, 6-0 1/2, 171, South Dade (Miami commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 79th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. A University of Miami commitment since June 25, 2016.

31. Terrell Perriman, WR, 5-10, 176, Central

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 81st best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. The University of Central Florida considered the heavy favorite to land a commitment from Perriman according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Perriman is the nephew of former University of Miami and NFL receiver Brett Perriman.

32. Rocky Shelton, OLB, 6-0, 205, St. Thomas Aquinas (Duke commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 83rd best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7. He’s been a Duke commitment since April 25.

33. Randy Russell, S, 5-11, 180, Carol City (Florida commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 96th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. The former University of Miami commitment has been a Florida Gator commitment since July 22.

34. Avery Thornton, S, 6-1, 175, Boyd Anderson (UCF commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 97th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. UCF commitment since July 21.

35. Bryand Rincher, CB, 5-9, 160, Piper (Western Kentucky commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 98th best player in state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been a Western Kentucky commitment since July 24. A state champion in the 100 meter dash in 2016.

36. Marvin Alexander, WR, 6-3, 175, Chaminade-Madonna (Kentucky commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 102nd best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been a Kentucky commitment since Feb. 21.

37. Billy Joseph, OLB, 6-0, 213, Northwestern

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 101st best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 7.

38. James Head, DE, 6-5, 213, Southridge (Indiana commitment)

The book: Rated a 3-star recruit and the 104th best player in the state regardless of position by 247Sports as of Aug. 14. He’s been committed to Indiana since July 21.
