Trailing Keys Gate Charter 21-13 entering the fourth quarter, Mater Academy was staring at an 0-2 start to its season. But, led by quarterback Temothas Herrington, Mater scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns against Keys Gate (0-2) to rally for a 34-21 victory on Saturday afternoon at Traz Powell Stadium in a game that was delayed more than 90 minutes in the second quarter because of lightning.
The big payoff play came with 6:17 left and the score tied at 21 when Herrington dropped back and found freshman Tre Fowler for an 18-yard touchdown pass to give Mater the lead for good. Just three minutes earlier Herrington, on a fourth-and-one from the Keys Gate seven, ran a quarterback sneak that only netted him the first down but the touchdown as well. He then skirted around the right side and just barely reached the flag for the two-point conversion which tied the game.
Herrington was 9-of-15 passing for 148 yards while rushing for 43 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Aaron Ortiz led the way for Keys Gate by rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for one. Mater, which lost its season opener to Northwestern improved to 1-1 while Keys Gate fell to 0-2.
