Miami-Dade High Schools

Miami-Dade high school football games of the week

All games at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

WEEK 1 | AUG. 28

Columbus vs. South Dade,

7 p.m., Harris Field

Comment: A last-second field goal missed by Columbus decided last season’s contest. South Dade graduated a majority of its state-title squad, but a win here would prove the Bucs are still a contender.

Others to watch: Aug. 30, Carol City vs. Killian (Tropical), 7; Norland at MLK (GA), 2; Central at Stephenson (GA), 5; Booker T. Washington at Tucker (GA), 8

WEEK 2 | SEPT. 5

Booker T. vs. Central, Traz Powell

Comment: Last year’s meeting lived up to the hype as then No. 1 and No. 2 nationally ranked teams clashed with BTW winning and later completing a national championship season. Both could be in the top 5 in the national polls again if they reach this game unbeaten.

Others to watch: Sept. 4, South Dade vs. Carol City (Traz), 7; Sept. 5, Belen vs. Columbus (FIU); Champagnat Catholic at Westminster Christian, 4; Delray Heritage at Gulliver, 4; Sept. 6, Hialeah vs. Southwest (Tropical), 7.

WEEK 3 | SEPT. 12

Coral Gables vs. Columbus, Tropical Park

Comment: Gables swept both meetings last year with a pair of dramatic comebacks, including a win in the regional semifinals. With both teams primed for a run to state, this one should set the tone for each team’s season and decide District 14-8A.

Others to watch: Sept. 11, American vs. South Dade (Traz), 7; Sept. 12, Booker T. vs. Carol City (Traz); Hialeah vs. HML (Milander); Sept. 13, Jackson vs. Norland (N. Miami).

WEEK 4 | SEPT. 19

Southwest at Belen Jesuit, 4 p.m.

Comment: Southwest is aiming for a third consecutive District 15-8A championship. Belen is hoping to return to contender status. This game, albeit early in the season, could go a long way toward both.

Others to watch: Sept. 18, Columbus vs. Central (Traz), 7; Sept. 19, Booker T. vs. Jackson (Traz); Homestead vs. Norland (N. Miami); Westminster Christian at Boynton Beach, 7; Sept. 20, Carol City vs. Northwestern (Traz), 7.

WEEK 5 | SEPT. 26

Gulliver at Westminster Christian, 4 p.m.

Comment: Two of the most talented small-school teams in the state meet in a nondistrict clash. Westminster is one of the top state contenders in Class 3A, and this is one of Gulliver’s best teams in a while.

Others to watch: Sept. 26, Killian vs. Homestead (Harris); Norland vs. Columbus (Tropical); Sept. 27, Blanche Ely vs. Northwestern (Traz), 7.

WEEK 6 | OCT. 2

North Miami vs. North Miami Beach,

7 p.m., N. Miami Stadium.

Comment: North Miami broke a long playoff and district championship drought last season. The Pioneers face one of their toughest tests on the road to repeat against their longtime rivals.

Others to watch: Oct. 2, Central vs. Homestead (Harris); South Dade at Southridge; Northwestern vs. Norland (Traz); Oct. 3, Westminster Academy at La Salle, 7

WEEK 7 | OCT. 8

Killian vs. Coral Gables,

7 p.m., Tropical Park.

Comment: A potential playoff preview in this rematch of last year’s thriller won by the Cougars. That day, Killian dealt Gables its only regular-season loss, and the Cavaliers want payback.

Others to watch: Oct. 9, NMB vs. Carol City (N. Miami), 7; Oct. 10, Booker T. vs. Northwestern (Traz); Oct. 11, Columbus at Highlands (KY).

WEEK 8 | OCT. 17

Central vs. Northwestern, Traz Powell.

Comment: The classic rivalry game has been dominated by Central over the past few years. This game still brings out the fan bases for both sides and should indicate if the Bulls are starting to get back to their old contending ways.

Others to watch: Oct. 17, Booker T. at Gulliver, 4; Carol City vs. Homestead (Traz); Palmetto vs. Killian (Harris); Miami Springs vs. American (Milander); Jackson at Cardinal Gibbons, 7; Oct. 18, North Miami vs. Hialeah, 7.

WEEK 9 | OCT. 24

Carol City vs. Central, Traz Powell

South Dade vs. Killian, Harris Field

Comment: Both games are expected to be the ones that decide their respective districts. Central is still the favorite in District 16-6A, but if anyone can challenge that defense, it might be the Chiefs. For Killian, this is the chance for payback against South Dade for last season’s playoff loss. Or will South Dade win the district, denying Killian its second in a row?

Others to watch: Oct. 24, Booker T. vs. Norland; Miami Springs vs. Mater Academy (Curtis).

WEEK 10 | OCT. 30

Mater Academy vs. American,

7 p.m., Milander.

Comment: This one could decide the championship of District 16-7A — a division ruled by American in recent years. But Mater is ready to challenge that status, as is Miami Springs.

Others to watch: Oct. 30, Killian at Southridge, 7; Norland vs. Carol City (Traz), 7.

WEEK 11 | NOV. 7

Southwest vs. Coral Gables, Tropical Park

Northwestern vs. Jackson, Traz Powell.

Comment: Rivalry weekend. The Soul Bowl is always a big event and often an interesting clash between rivals Northwestern and Jackson. But the Southwest-Gables game has become a competitive rivalry the past few years now that Southwest is better.

Others to watch: Nov. 6, American vs. Carol City (Traz), 7; Nov. 7, Homestead vs. South Dade (Harris); Belen at Pace.
