Blanche Ely tops Jackson in spring game

Minnesota Vikings draftee Jabari Price created a buzz upon his return to alma mater Blanche Ely on Saturday but had no problem conceding the spotlight to Ely 6-7 star receiver Therrell Gosier.

Gosier, the talk of Blanche Ely spring practices, left Price, the latest standout Ely defensive back to follow All-Pro Patrick Peterson, Al Harris, Tyron Carter to the NFL, singing his praises following Ely’s 31-14 victory over Miami Jackson.

“I don’t know Gosier personally, but I heard about him around the neighborhood, and I just wanted to to see him for myself,” Price said.” He is a matchup nightmare. He is the big, strong receiver that can compete for the ball. You know in college that is obviously where everybody is going.”

Gosier showed his big-play ability on the first possession, hauling in a 30-yard pass to put the Tigers at the Jackson 47-yard line. Gosier then caught a 25-yard pass, setting up Teddrick Moffett’s 1-yard scoring run to put Ely up 7-0 with 7:08 left in the first quarter.

Following an Ely fumble recovery by Wadler Greffin at the Jackson 14-yard line and an 11-yard run by Robert Williams, Gosier caught a 3-yard touchdown on a slant route for a 14-0 lead with 5:27 left in the first quarter.

“I’m just trying to help my team win a state title,” said Gosier, a high-priority target of Clemson, West Virginia and Nebraska, among others. “I’m looked at as the leader of the receiving corps. I think my ability to stretch the field will mean a lot. It will give our slot guys more room to work with, open the field.”

Jackson’s Desmond Phillips turned in his own highlight reel when he took a pitch at the Generals’ 25-yard line, beat the Tigers defense to the right sideline and ran for a 75-yard touchdown to pull Jackson within 14-7.

But Ely’s Chevron Silvera deflated any hope for a Jackson rally with a fumble recovery at the Jackson 28-yard line with 3:30 left in the second quarter. On the next play, Moffett, doing his best Russell Wilson imitation, rolled to his right, shook off a defender and hit Ladderick Smith in stride at the back of the end zone to push the Ely lead to 24-7 at halftime.
