A close call in the recent district championship game may have given Palmetto hope it was about to reverse its recent futility in its series with softball district rival Coral Reef.
The Barracudas put an end to that quickly Tuesday afternoon.
Led by its potent lineup once again, Coral Reef routed Palmetto 14-5 in a Region 4-8A semifinal at home and advanced to the regional final round for the second consecutive season.
The Barracudas (20-8), the defending Class 8A state champions, will play at West Broward on Friday at 4 p.m.
Coral Reef defeated Palmetto for the 10th consecutive time, sweeping the season series 5-0 for the second consecutive year.
“It’s tough to beat a team five times especially after the last game where we had to come back from being down three runs to win the district,” Coral Reef coach Dario Rodriguez said. “We had two really great practices the past couple of days and I had a feeling we were going to do something special.”
Alex Garcia hit a three-run double in the fourth inning that sparked a six-run frame allowing Coral Reef to break the game open after Palmetto had taken advantage of two errors to cut its deficit to 4-3.
Kylan Becker scored four runs and hit a two-run home run. Becker also went 2 for 4 and had four RBI.
Cassandra Garcia scored three runs and went 1 for 3 with three runs and an RBI.
Carsyn Gordon continued to play strong since coming back from injury going 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Pitcher Michelle Mesa went the distance striking out four and allowing only two earned runs.
