South Miami boys’ basketball withstands rally by Coral Gables

South Miami was able to withstand a late rally by Coral Gables to pick-up a 63-54 win and advance to the Region 4-8A final Tuesday night at South Miami Senior High.

In the regional final, South Miami (19-4) will travel to McArthur. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.

The first quarter was close throughout. With nine seconds left in the quarter, a three-pointer by Marquise Clark put the Cobras up 11-7.

South Miami started to pull away in the second quarter and went up 15-7, thanks to an 8-0 run. The Cobras led 32-18 at halftime. Clark had 18 points at the half. With four minute to play in the third quarter, South Miami led 41-21.

Late in the third quarter, Coral Gables sophomore Al Wajid Aminu was fouled hard on a dunk attempt and lay on the court for 22 minutes before he was placed a stretcher.

According to Coral Gables athletic director Louis Romero, Aminu was taken to Miami Children’s Hospital for observation.

Coral Gables would rally late and a basket by Imani Figuereo made the score 53-46 with 1:34 to play.

Thanks to clutch foul shooting and key rebounds, the Cobras were able to hang on for the win.

“I feel like we have a great chance and this team is special and we have a lot of potential,” said South Miami’s Joseph Lopez. “I think we’re going to win it [states].”

Clark had a game-high with 24 points. Lopez had a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
