Hot-shooting Pace trounces Gulliver in regional quarterfinals

Just because the shots aren’t falling doesn’t mean the Monsignor Pace boys’ basketball team will stop shooting. In fact, it’s likely just getting warmed up. That was the case Thursday in a 91-70 Class 4A regional quarterfinal win over Gulliver at Pace.

C.J. Fisher and Danny Duarte led the Spartans’ attack with 25 and 22 points, respectively. Pace (19-10) moves on to face Ransom Everglades in the regional semifinals Tuesday. Gulliver (15-14) got a team-high 24 points from Enrique Lafuente.

The points onslaught is nothing new for the Spartans, who average 84 points a game and have hit triple digits three times. Against the Raiders, Pace missed a number of open shots early and held just a 9-6 lead four minutes into the first quarter. But from that point until halftime, everything started falling as the Spartans built a 53-33 halftime lead.

“It doesn’t faze these kids,” Spartans coach Anthony Serra said of the early dry spell. “They know if they shots aren’t going in to just keep shooting. They believe they will start falling.”

Gulliver, which was humbled by the Spartans 91-28 at the end of January, fought back with a 16-3 run in the third quarter to pull within 12, but the Raiders would get no closer. Despite a size advantage at center with 6-11 center Victor Unyaelunmo, the Raiders could not keep up with the frenetic pace of a Pace team that often subbed five players at once.

“We obviously knew what they were capable of,” Gulliver coach Manny Bloom said. “Our kids battled. It’s just hard when they start hitting shots and have all those new people coming in and out.”
