A strong defensive effort and a big second quarter lifted the Killian Cougars to a 21-3 victory over the Belen Wolverines on Friday night in the first round of the regional playoffs.
The win puts the Cougars in the Region 8A semifinals, where they will take on the South Dade Buccaneers on Nov. 22. The Cougars defeated the Buccaneers 21-13 earlier this season, and they’ll have to do so again to make it to the regional final.
“We have a tough opponent next week, and it’s always tough to beat a good team twice,” Killian coach Cory Johnson said. “Any win in the playoffs is a good win. We’re not in it for style points; we’re in it to proceed to the next week.”
After a sluggish offensive start, Killian quarterback Joel Careaga gave the Cougars a jolt in the second quarter when he hit running back Jordan Herrera on a pass up the middle that ended up turning into a 72-yard touchdown pass with 5:15 left in the first half.
