North Miami Pioneers bounce back from loss with 42-0 rout

Sometimes all you need is a good slap in the face.

And that’s exactly what Ed Williams referred to with his North Miami football team following last week’s shockingly lopsided 29-point loss to American in their season opener.

And his Pioneer players heeded the message on Thursday night as they scored five first-half touchdowns to grab a 35-0 lead and cruised to a 42-0 rout of Hialeah-Miami Lakes at Milander Stadium as the second half became an exercise in running the clock.

“Yeah, sometimes you need a good slap in the face, and last week’s Amercian game was a real wake-up call for everyone,” said Williams whose team made the playoffs for the first time in 14 years last season and returns a loaded and potent offense led by quarterback Hilton Joseph. “We definitely needed to get things right tonight and did a good job of coming out and taking it right to them and never allowing them in the game.”

They did so thanks mainly to Joseph and a fast-paced “blink-and-you’ll-miss-the-next-snap” offense that rang up 351 total yards, Joseph completing 19-of-26 for 231 yards and three touchdown passes. He also scored twice on the ground on runs of 22 and 8 yards.

It’s been a rough start for the Trojans, who are not only off to an 0-2 start but have been outscored 77-0 in the two games.
