Pines Charter standout expected to make oral commitment

It’s anybody’s guess which elite college basketball program Pines Charter star Haanif Cheatham will make an oral commitment to on Friday. Cheatham’s long-awaited decision is expected to arrive shortly after 2 p.m. inside the school.

Marquette, Heat superstar Dwyane Wade’s alum, became the latest NCAA Tournament regular to throw its hat into the Cheatham recruiting ring when the 2013-14 Florida Dairy Farmer’s Class 6A Player of the Year and Rivals.com four-star prospect paid an official visit last weekend. Miami, Georgetown, Murray State, Pittsburgh, Georgia, Wichita State and Cincinnati are among other big-name programs which have offered Cheatham.

Whoever is fortunate to land the left-handed 6-5 point guard will get a prospect with a high IQ and extremely diverse skill set.

As a junior, Cheatham proved to be a triple-double threat every time he walked out on the court, averaging 26.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Cheatham finished with four triple-doubles and led Pines Charter (18-6) to the 6A Region 4-6A Finals, where the Jaguars lost to eventual state champion Miami Norland.

Against a formidable spring and summer AAU schedule, Cheatham shone for Nike Team Florida, averaging 16.9 points and 3.4 rebounds in Nike EYBL competition.
