Coral Springs Charter on historic mission

Miami Pace defenders sizing up Coral Springs Charter swingman Austin Vaughn for a blocked shot in the Region 4-4A Finals were often left swiping at air.

On his way to a 10 point first quarter and 29-point game, the 6-5 Vaughn contorted his body in the air to get defenders off balance and then used his incredible 6-8 wing span to finish at the rim unimpeded.

“Austin has that knack for hanging in the air, allowing the defender to go by and then finishing,” said Charter coach Alex Groothuis. “He reminds me of Stacy Augmon at UNLV years ago. They called him ‘Plastic Man.’ You think he’s shooting on this side then he shoots on the other side. Kind of like, now you see me, now you don’t.”

Vaughn takes his Houdini act to the Lakeland Center on Tuesday when the surprising Panthers (18-10) make their Class 4A state final four debut against perennial state power Jacksonville Ribault at 8:30 p.m.

Behind Vaughn (17 points, nine rebounds), Alonzo Taylor (18 ppg, 4 apg) and 6-4 wide body Karl Hylton (14 ppg, 7 rpg), Kajuan Kinsey and Trevor Lee, Charter has defied the odds to make it to the Big Dance.

Charter hopes to rekindle the offensive explosion they had against the Spartans, when they rolled up a school-record 111 points. Charter got a career night from Hylton (33 points).

“Hustle and toughness,” Groothius said. “That is what Austin brings. He has been the heart and soul of the program since he got here as a freshman. He is beyond valuable. He is our go to guy. He is versatile and brings so much to the table for our team.”

Charter was written off as state contenders after losing five of six games during a midseason stretch, but got back in the 4A race with eight consecutive victories.

If the Panthers can continue that postseason magic and move one victory away from achieving a dream few outside the their locker room saw possible, there is a good chance Vaughn will be front and center.

“We felt like we deserved to be here the whole time,” Vaughn said. “We hope to open up some more eyes. We’re looking to win. I wouldn’t be content with anything less.”
