McCarthy sweeps district boys’, girls’ golf tourney

Archbishop McCarthy’s boys and girls swept the District 24-2A golf tournament Tuesday at the Grand Palms Country Club.

Katie Williamson shot a 69 to win the girls’ individual title. Anthony Wells shot a 71 to win the boys’ title.

The Mavericks edged Gulliver on the girls’ side and got past Gulliver and Key West on the boys’ side en route to the tournament win.

Michelle Rodriguez led the way for Gulliver as she shot a team-best 73.

Western defeated Hollywood Hills in dominant fashion 25-10, 25-6, 25-5.

Amanda Medlock led the way for the Wildcats, registering16 kills, 13 digs, six aces and an assist. Melissa Taylor added 30 assists, six aces, four digs and three kills while Dani Tovar accounted for 11 digs, eight kills and five aces.

With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 16-5 on the season and will have a short turnaround as they face McArthur Wednesday.


Western d. Hollywood Hills 25-10, 25-6, 25-5:

Amanda Medlock 16 kills, 6 aces, 13 digs, assist. Melissa Taylor 30 assists, 3 kills, 6 aces, 4 digs. Dani Tovar 8 kills, 5 aces, 11 digs. WES 16-5.


The Calvary Christian Eagles took down Miami Country Day in a thrilling, five-set match 25-17, 23-25, 29-31, 25-12, 15-10.

Lindsay Foreman headlined win for Calvary with 20 kills, 17 digs and two blocks. Jessy Underwood added 44 assists, 15 digs, eight kills and two blocks while Alexa Romagnolo registered 16 digs, three aces and a kill.

The Eagles improve to 15-4 with the win.

Highlands Christian d. Westminster Academy 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12:

Bethany Chapmen 6 points, 12 digs, 11 kills. Karen Everett 2 points, 6 digs, 5 kills. HC 7-13.


Jenna Evans of the South Florida HEAT ran a 20:48 as she finished atop the leader board at the Miami Country Day Fast Times Meet.

Despite the performance from Evans, the Heat still finished second, behind Carrollton School in the team standings.

Marnie Madiedo led the way for Carrollton, finishing in second place with a time of 20:52. Carolyn Shields, also with the Heat, finished third with a time of 21:01.

Behind the second place finish of Jeremy Ferrell, Archbishop McCarthy won the boys’ side of the Miami Country Day Fast Times Meet.

Ferrell placed second with a 17:19; he was only beat out by Brandon Bejarano of Westminster Academy, who won the meet with a 17:04.

Belen Jesuit’s Joshua Collins rounded out the top three with a 17:21 performance.
