Football All-Star games coming up

The final group of football state champions will be crowned this weekend, which means All-Star game season begins.

The 21st annual Tournament of Champions Miami Dade High School All-Star game is one of the top events in the next few weeks.

The North vs. South All-Star classic will be played Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at Curtis Park in Miami. Around 100 of the top players in Miami-Dade County are expected to participate in the event.

The North team will be coached by Miami Norland’s Daryle Heidelburg, and the South will be coached by Miami Southridge offensive coordinator David Cooney. Tickets are $12.

In addition, the Warren Henry Miami-Dade High School Player of the Year Award will be announced Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Warren Henry Dealership off Highway U.S. 441. North Miami quarterback Hylton Joseph was the 2014 recipient of the award.

▪ The best of the best from Broward County will collide at 7 p.m. Thursday in the annual BCAA All-Star game at Nova High School. Tickets are $7.

▪ The Miami Dolphins’ annual Dade vs. Broward All-Star game will be held Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines.

BALAZS HONORED

Former longtime coach and athletic director Ron Balazs will be inducted into the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame. The induction will take place Dec. 15 at the Orlando World Center Marriott at the organization’s annual meeting.

Balazs retired in 2004 after a 35-year career that included 14 years as a wrestling and football coach and 21 years as an athletic director at Coral Park and Varela. Since his retirement, Balazs has served as executive director of the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (FIAAA).
