Cardinal Gibbons boys capture Jungle Queen Volleyball Classic

High schools roundup.

After all the dust had cleared in last weekend’s Jungle Queen Volleyball Classic, two of South Florida’s top boys’ volleyball programs wound up squaring off in the championship match and it was Cardinal Gibbons, which hosted the event, taking home the championship trophy.

That after the Chiefs, a state semifinalist a year ago, navigated their way through four matches over two days before beating defending state champion Killian in straight sets 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 in the championship match to remain undefeated at 18-0.

Most impressively is that the Chiefs did it without their top player, J.T. Martin in the lineup. Martin, a Pepperdine commit, cut his hand two days before the tournament and was not cleared by his physician to play.

No Martin? No problem as outside hitters Reece Kramer (12 kills, 2 aces, 2 digs), and Michael Valenzi (11 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks, 10 digs) along with setter Ethan Shinn (25 assists, 3 kills, 10 digs) all stepped up and led the way for Gibbons which defeated Columbus (25-16, 25-14), Hialeah (25-13, 25-13), Palmetto (25-14, 25-13) and Orlando Freedom (26-24, 26-28, 15-12) in the semifinals on its way to the final.
