Miami Herald Athletic Awards breakfast Tuesday at Jungle Island

The top high school athletes and coaches in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties will be honored Tuesday and Thursday morning at the 2017 Miami Herald Athletic Awards breakfasts presented by the Orange Bowl.

Dade’s sold-out event begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrott Jungle Trail. Broward’s event is at 8 a.m. Thursday at Signature Grand, 6900 State Road 84 in Davie.

Among the top awards handed out each year by the newspaper in each county: Overall Male and Female Athletes of the Year, Scholar-Athletes of the Year, Boys and Girls Coaches of the Year, the Leo Suarez/Walter Krietsch Courage Award winners and the Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Athletes of the Year and Coaches of the Year in each sport are also chosen.

This high school calendar 17 teams in Dade and 23 in Broward won state championships. That doesn’t include baseball. Those finals begin later this week and carry over into next week.
