Chaminade-Madonna makes regional softball final

Chaminade-Madonna didn't need much offense Thursday afternoon, not with sophomore Emily Winburn dealing from the circle.

The Lions got plenty of runs, however, and moved to within a victory of the state softball final four with an 8-1 victory over visiting Florida Christian.

Chaminade-Madonna (18-6) will face either Westminster Christian or Westminster Academy in Tuesday's Region 4-4A finale with the winner of that showdown headed to Vero Beach.

Florida Christian ends its season 10-14.

“The girls came out to play,” Lions coach Lorena Spaulding said afterward.

“When you put that jersey on, it’s game time. Game days are Christmas morning. It’s so exciting.”

Florida Christian had a runner in scoring position in the top of the first yet Winburn ended that threat with a strikeout — the first of four consecutive Ks.

“She’s only a sophomore," Spaulding said, “but she is so confident in there. She’s such a leader on this team. She puts everyone on her back.”

In the bottom of the frame, the Lions scored twice as Alex Simon drove in the initial run with a triple then scored on a double from Bridgette Tuxburry.

Taylor Despars made it 3-0 in the second by coming home on a grounder from Olivia Callari.

Florida Christian spoiled the shutout in the fourth when Nicole Fontela singled, stole second and third and came home on what was ruled an illegal pitch as the first base umpire said Winburn didn’t properly drag her foot.

No worries for the Lions, however, as they got their run back in their next trip up as Callari came home on an infield error.

Chaminade-Madonna blew things open with a four-run sixth highlighted by Kimberly Paulino’s based-loaded clearing double.

“We have the potential, but our next game is going to be tough,” Spaulding said of the region title game.

“We just have to come out and play like we did [Thursday]. It doesn’t matter who we play, what their record is. It’s a whole new season. Now is what counts.”
