Carmen Jackson has spent the past 25 years giving what she calls "tough love" to Miami Northwestern’s girls’ track and field student-athletes.

Her efforts have produced a program that’s won a state-record 13 state championships, and sent countless athletes to college to earn careers in and out of sports.

On Monday morning, the City of Miami presented Jackson with a "Key to the City" at a ceremony at Northwestern’s school auditorium.

"There’s no other person I know that’s more worthy in track and field to receive this award than coach Jackson," said City of Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon, a Northwestern graduate, who presented Jackson with the proclamation. "It brings my heart great joy to be able to recognize her in this way."

Jackson was moved by the ceremony, which included creative musical and artistic tributes to her put together by Bulls’ student-athletes.

"Northwestern is a dynasty and I mean that from the heart," Jackson said. "Today has made me think about how I got here and how I walked to my true destiny and it was to here for these kids."

A number of former athletes were on-hand as were Jackson’s high school coach, Lula Smith, who coached her when she ran track in high school at Miami Jackson, and Carol Hardemon, her youth club coach.

"This is outstanding and what she said about people with resources coming in and helping students at this school is very important,” Carol Hardemon said. “Coach Carmen just wants to give those kids what they need. Every kid in her program earns an opportunity to go to college."

Under Jackson’s guidance the Bulls have produced numerous Division-I college standoputs and Olympians such as Brianna Rollins and Tiffany Ross-Williams.

In addition to several Track and Field Coach of the Year awards, Jackson has been honored with The Miami Herald’s Overall Female Sports Coach of the Year award twice.

"She has always been a no-nonsense coach and tough," Smith said. "I knew from the beginning she would be something special."
