Camacho’s buzzer-beater lifts Miami Christian by Dillard

Eduardo Camacho’s buzzer-beating three-pointer gave Miami Christian a 69-67 victory over Dillard on Thursday during the second annual HoopHall Miami Boys’ Basketball Invitational at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The winning shot gave the undefeated Victors their fifth victory.

“It was big time,” said Camacho, who scored 11 points. “I felt like a pro.”

The contest between the 2016 6A champion Panthers and the state title favorite Miami Christian was the premiere matchup in the five-game tournament, and it did not disappoint. The Victors led throughout the first half before Dillard’s halfcourt style enforced its will.

Robert Johnson poured in 12 points in the paint and was integral in the comeback. Jordan Wright’s three-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining looked like it could be the final blow, but the ball movement of the Victors gave just enough space for Camacho’s winner.

“I like this style of play,” said Felipe Haase, who scored 18 points.

Josh Rosario made three three-pointers and had 15 points, and Neftali Alvarez scored 10 points for the Victors. Wright scored 13 points to lead the Panthers (4-3). Deshawn Bartley added 10 points.

In other Hoophall action, Westminster Academy edged Norland 64-63 despite a game-high 23 points from Kennith Rolle. Tony Atkinson had 18 points, and Jason Strong and Zach Scott each chipped in 17 points for the Lions. Sagemont School beat Palmetto 63-49 in the opening game, paced by 14 points apiece from Luis Hurtado and Tyler Polley. Miami Country Day edged Royal Palm Beach 59-56 in the second contest behind 18 points from Mick Lynott and 16 points from Ibrahim Doumbia.
