Westminster’s Guso, Lourdes’ Abreu are Dade Beach Volleyball Coaches of the Year
In a year where Westminster Christian had to re-tool its roster a bit following the graduation of key players, Sylvia Guso directed her squad back to the state final four.
And over at Lourdes, Sebastian Abreu directed a breakthrough season for the Bobcats as they made it to state for the first time.
And so, Guso and Abreu are the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade County Beach Volleyball Co-Coaches of the Year.
Abreu was a busy individual throughout the spring volleyball season.
While he was directing Lourdes to its first regional championship and a berth in the Class 2A state final four, he was also responsible for a strong campaign by Varela’s boys’ volleyball team, which advanced to the regional finals.
The day Lourdes played in the state semifinals in Tallahassee early in the morning, Abreu journeyed back to Miami and made it in time to coach the Vipers in their regional final loss to Belen.
That diligent work ethic and success put him on the radar of colleges. Abreu recently accepted a job at Barry University to become the school’s first men’s volleyball coach. Barry will begin competing this fall.
Abreu’s experience should prove valuable for a debuting program.
His Lourdes squad was led by the sophomore pair of Juliette Bello-Vazquez and Andrea Nunez, and sibling seniors Ellie and Emma Muniz. The pairs led the Bobcats to a win over St. Brendan and their first regional title.
Guso, a former indoor standout at Westminster and later at the University of Miami, continues to prove she is one of the top high school coaches in the state.
This season, she had to replace standout Zoey Matias, who had formed a great pair with senior Gigi Artiles at the top of Westminster’s lineup in recent years.
Artiles paired with senior Cassie Thomas to keep the beat going and guide the Warriors to the Class 1A state final four.
The Warriors showed off the depth of their program once again as juniors Alyana Cadavid and Ava Cantos, and the pair of freshman Bella Fernandez and seventh-grader Jordan Kurenuma boosted their overall lineup.
