Brazil is noted for being the birthplace of many MMA stars, and UFC fighter Amanda Nunes is one of them.
Nunes who trains at American Top Team in (South Florida) Coconut Creek, will battle for the women’s bantamweight title against champ Miesha Tate during the historic UFC 200 pay-per-view on Saturday, July 9 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
What once was a division dominated by one face is now open to several -- from Ronda Rousey to Holly Holm to Tate. With the way the belt has changed hands lately, the 27-year-old Nunes has a shot against the 29-year-old Tate.
Respected in the sport, Nunes earned this spot. Ranked No.4, she is 5-1 in UFC. In her last fight in March in Las Vegas, she won by unanimous decision over Russia’s Valentina Shevchenko.

Nunes is an octagon veteran. Prior to UFC, she competed for Strikeforce and Invicta FC. Her overall record is 12-4, including a UFC Performance of the Night victory over Maryland’s Sara McMann at UFC Fight Night: Teixeira vs. Saint Preux in August 2015 in Nashville.
Her background also includes training with MMA Masters in Miami.
What’s most interesting was her life in Brazil.
Even though Brazil is noted for its mixed martial arts training, Nunes grew up in a very small town where any type of MMA was hard to find. So it wasn’t easy, but she somehow found it -- in the form of jiu-jitsu -- in her small city, after learning of her sister, Vanessa’s, jiu-jitsu training in the big city.
A pioneer of jiu-jitsu in her small town, Nunes adapted very quickly to the training. A natural, it didn’t take long for her to compete... and win.
Nunes discusses that part of her life and more during an interview.
