Real Madrid and Barcelona aren’t the only Spanish rivals facing off in Miami this summer.
Two days before “El Clasico Miami,” the July 29 soccer mega-matchup at Hard Rock Stadium, Spanish Mixed Martial Arts fighters Abner “Skullman” Lloveras of Barcelona and Javier Fuentes of Madrid will compete in “Combate Clasico” in Wynwood.
The July 27 fight will take place at Mana Wynwood and be televised live on Azteca America. It is part of a week-long schedule of events leading to “El Clasico,” including a soccer match between Champions League finalist Juventus of Italy and French power Paris Saint-Germain on July 26, a legends game, Real Madrid-Barcelona open training session, concerts, fanfest, art exhibits, and VIP parties.
Lloveras, a former Spanish Olympic boxing champion, is 20-9-1. He holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and in 2015 was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter: Team McGregor vs. Team Faber reality television series on Fox Sports 1.
The 27-year-old Fuentes has earned all of his professional career victories to date by way of (T)KO or submission. Other fighters on the card include Marcelo “Pitbull” Rojo of Argentina.
“We are excited to be working with Relevent Sports and the International Champions Cup to bring the Combate Americas brand of electrifying, professional Hispanic MMA action to Miami,” Combate Americas CEO and UFC co-founder Campbell McLaren said. “This promises to be a phenomenal week of live sports and music, culminating in a historic showdown between the world’s two biggest soccer powerhouses.”
More than 80 percent of the tickets for the Barcelona vs. Real Madrid “El Clasico” match have been sold, and 75 percent of the ticket buyers are from outside Florida.
