For the first time since players reported to fall camp, Hurricanes coach Al Golden indicated there’s a leader in the punting competition, and that leader is Florida transfer Justin Vogel.
Vogel, a sophomore walk-on from Tampa, is competing against fifth-year senior walk-on Ricky Carroll.
“We’re feeling better about it,” Golden said. “I thought Vogel had a really good day today. Surprisingly, kicking off, too. Obviously we knew he was doing well punting. But this was his best kickoff day. It comes at a good time. …[Tuesday] is a big special teams day.”
Speaking of special teams, RB Duke Johnson said he is not doing any return work on kickoffs or punts. UM needs to protect his body.
