Happy first day of school for everyone out there, including the University of Miami students.
We just spoke with Mark Richt, and guess what? We have to wait another day for the starting quarterback to be revealed.
Richt confirmed to us what he told WQAM’s Joe Rose Monday morning: “We’ll probably sometime tomorrow talk to the players about what we’re going to do as far as naming a starter for the first ball game. But I will say Malik did very well, Evan did very well — and they did get the reps with the No. 1 unit. N’Kosi and Cade struggled a little bit more. Mostly, when you go with the No. 2 [offensive] unit vs. the No. 1 offense, it’s not as easy to have a good day.’’
Richt said both Perry and Weldon are “outstanding players’’ who “have got the skill-set you want. They got the right learning ability, they’ve got the right character in my opinion... But you’re racing against the clock.’’
That said, the quarterback order was, as usual, Malik Rosier, Evan Shirreffs, N’Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon.
Here’s what I noticed for our 10 minutes or so of viewing:
***Left tackle Kc McDermott was pedaling on a conditioning bike while the others were out there practicing. Richt said someone stepped on McDermott’s foot but that he appears to be OK. “We don’t think it’s anything too serious, but we didn’t want to keep aggravating it at this point. We wanted it to calm down a little bit before we put him back in.”
That would be a major problem if it gets exacerbated.
Trevor Darling moved to left tackle while McDermott is sidelined, and freshman Corey Gaynor replaced Darling at left guard. Richt is very happy with the first-team O-line of McDermott, left guard Trevor Darling, center Tyler Gauthier, Navaughn Donaldson and Tyree St. Louis.
“When we’re healthy, when everybody is healthy, I like our top five,’’ Richt said. “That’s been a great group.’’
The coach said “the guys knocking on the door’’ are guard Hayden Mahoney and Corey Gaynor [at center/guard]. We’re trying to get Kai [-Leon Herbert] and George [Brown] to give us a little bit more. Jahair [Jones], he has his moments. He can physically do it, but when things start going fast, we have to make sure he has his assignments right. We’re close to having, I wouldn’t say 10 guys, but if everybody came through... We have 10 guys who can physically do it, the question is whether they’re reliable or not. I would say they’re not there yet.”
***Wide receiver Ahmmon Richards (hamstring) is obviously still nursing that hammy and was not seen with the other guys. Really think they need to give Ahmmon plenty of time to heal, even if it means missing the first game.
***Receivers Lawrence Cager and Jeff Thomas, who some were wondering about, were out there with the rest of the guys running drills full speed.
Some other tidbits from the WQAM interview:
Richt said he was very pleased with the play of tight end Michael Irvin II in the scrimmage.
Richt said Wednesday will be the first day the team breaks up into scout teams.
