Victor Wembanyama Accused Of 'Cheap Shot' During NBA Finals
Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama has been having a difficult tournament and their 0-2 record in San Antonio has them halfway to losing his first Finals appearance. But amid all of the team's struggles on the court, Wemby is getting called out for some pretty "cheap" shots he's taking.
The one instance that really got under peoples' skins came in a confrontation between Wemby and point guard Jose Alvarado. While trying to grab an offensive rebound, the French sensation draped his arms around the 6-foot guard and spun him around.
Alvarado gave Wemby a look but resumed playing without asking an official to call a foul.
"I Hate Wemby"
Knicks fans were far less lenient towards Wemby than Alvarado was though. Fans called him out, accusing him of being a cheater and getting all of the favorable calls from the referees.
"We're just gonna let Wemby get away with this? Just more proof the whistle was egregious tonight," one user on X remarked.
"7'5" and the guy gets away with an insane amount of obvious fouls. It's gonna get very old very quickly," wrote another.
"The audacity to do this (expletive) and still (expletive) to the ref for a call. Laughable," a third wrote.
"If this was a regular season game Jose would have slap boxed him."
"Hilarious that the ethical golden boy has a playoff cheap shot reel that surpasses Dort and a flop reel longer than SGA's. You had a nice run young man but once the all-seeing eye trains its gaze on you it's over."
Wembanyama is giving the Knicks everything he's got, but it just hasn't been enough. Karl-Anthony Towns had him on lockdown for most of the first two games and a strong case can be made that the Spurs have only had a real chance in this series because Jalen Brunson is shooting under 40-percent in the series.
He's going to have to dig just a little deeper to stave off elimination in New York City next week, let alone get the Spurs back into the race.
