WNBA Makes Decision on Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark Incident

The Indiana Fever sparked controversy when they suddenly ruled out Caitlin Clark during Wednesday's game against the Portland Fire. It's worth noting that Indiana didn't have anyone in their injury report before announcing Clark's absence.

Indiana's decision was met with shock and criticism, especially since teams are required to "report information concerning player injuries, illnesses, other medical conditions or rest for all WNBA games by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game." Failure to do so could lead to an investigation by the WNBA for potential disciplinary actions.

Fever head coach Stephanie White admitted to reporters before the game that Clark didn't practice on Tuesday due to the issue, so it's questionable why they didn't put the All-Star playmaker in the injury report as required by the WNBA.

WNBA Sends Warning to Indiana Fever

While some expected some kind of punishment for the Fever, that doesn't seem to be the case.

According to Chloe Peterson of Indianapolis Star, the WNBA has sent a warning to the Fever for the way they handled Clark's injury situation. Front Office Sports also confirmed that Indiana was not fined for the violation.

Several followers are not happy with the WNBA's decision to simply warn the Fever, though, with one critic writing, "Slap to the wrist with women's basketball got it!!! A complete joke."

"Only a warning? Wow. This is why nobody takes the WNBA seriously," a commenter added. Another one said, "Again showing this league lacks professionalism. Not a way to make changes in the league."

"A warning that should've been [a] $100,000 fine," a poster further stated.

"NAH FINE THEM BRO," a fifth critic demanded.

Is Caitlin Clark Playing?

For what it's worth, the Fever listed Clark on their injury report ahead of Friday's game against the Golden State Valkyries.

Clark has a "Probable" designation, meaning there is a high chance that she returns from her injury.

Clark is averaging 24.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.0 block this 2026 season.
