College football: Joe vs. Pro, Week 12

Could Florida State still reach the national title game without quarterback Jameis Winston? Considering how unscrupulous college football is these days, that fact more than anything could determine whether Winston remains the Seminoles’ quarterback. The simple answer is yes. The Seminoles are 57-point favorites this week against Idaho and will be heavily favored, with or without Winston, against Florida and whatever team FSU faces in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game (most likely Duke). Joseph Goodman, the Miami Herald’s college football columnist, thought FSU’s scandal would affect the team’s performance last week against Syracuse and he was dead wrong. Joe missed on Noles and went 2-6 against the spread and 6-2 straight up. He is 48-45-3 against the spread for the season and 69-27 straight up. The Pro, Lee Sterling of, also went 2-6 against the spread last week and 6-2 straight up. The Pro is 54-39-3 against the spread and 69-27 straight up. On to the picks!

Idaho at Florida State, Florida State by 57

Joe’s pick FSU remained focused last week but might have trouble keeping its edge against Idaho. Who am I kidding? That line is just ridiculous. Florida State 45, Idaho 10

Marshall at FIU, Marshall by 33

Joe’s pick Thundering Herd coach Doc Holliday will want to make a statement in recruit-rich South Florida. Marshall 52, FIU 10

Virginia at Miami, Miami by 20

Joe’s pick The wheels fell off last week for Miami, but it could salvage the season against Virginia. Miami 33, Virginia 20
Pro’s pick Underdog rules this series, going 7-1-1 against the spread in the past nine meetings. Take a good look at UM’s defensive personnel and coaches because changes could be looming. Miami 30, Virginia 20

Texas A&M at Louisiana State, Louisiana State by 4

Joe’s pick Johnny Football seizes the moment to improve his Heisman candidacy. Texas A&M 45, Louisiana State 35

Baylor at Oklahoma State, Baylor by 91/2

Joe’s pick Upset special. Injuries catch up to Bears. Oklahoma State 42, Baylor 35

SMU at South Florida, SMU by 4

Joe’s pick Bulls continue positive rebuilding process. South Florida 25, SMU 21

New Mexico State at FAU, FAU by 20

Joe’s pick Fueled by some kind of unexplainable rage, the Owls just keep on winning. FAU 32, New Mexico State 10
Pro’s pick By winning their last four games, the Owls could possibly go to a bowl game. Aggies can chuck it, but Owls have the No. 4 pass defense and will be focused. FAU 45, New Mexico State 20

Missouri at Ole Miss, Missouri by 21/2

Joe’s pick Upset party grooves on inside The Grove. Mississippi 30, Missouri 27
Pro’s pick Running back Jeff Scott and two defensive starters returned last week for the Rebels, who also have defensive backs that could challenge the tall Tigers receivers. Wrong team is favored. Mississippi 37, Missouri 34
