College football: Joe vs. the Pro, Week 8

With back-to-back losing weeks against the spread, Joe is officially in tank mode. Joseph Goodman, the Miami Herald’s college football columnist, went 2-6 last week against the spread for his worst week of the season, and saved absolutely no dignity by going 6-2 straight up. The Pro, Lee Sterling of, has gone 4-4 in consecutive weeks against the spread and still hasn’t had a losing week all season. The Pro is 37-17-2 against the spread this season and 42-14 straight up. Joe is 31-23-2 against the spread and 44-12 straight up. On to the picks!

Louisville -13 vs. UCF

Joe’s pick Louisville can’t get out of the American Athletic Conference fast enough. Amazingly, this is the most important game in that conference this season. Louisville 24, UCF 21
Pro’s pick Cardinals defensive numbers giving up 13 or less points is deceiving. They haven’t faced an offense with weapons like UCF possesses. Heisman hopeful Teddy Bridgewater will be tested by a defense that has given up only two TD passes. Louisville 31, UCF 27

Florida State -3 vs. Clemson

Joe’s pick In preparation for Saturday prime-time showdown — and simply to waste time at work Friday — do YouTube searches of Jameis Winston’s middle-school games. Thank me later. Florida State 35, Clemson 31
Pro’s pick Tigers defense vastly improved, giving up 101 fewer yards than a year ago at this time. Home team has won six in a row in the series. Clemson 34, Florida State 30

Texas A&M -13 vs. Auburn

Joe’s pick Nick Marshall might be back in the lineup for the Tigers, but he’s probably not going to be at 100 percent against Johnny Football and Friends. Texas A&M 28, Auburn 21
Pro’s pick Tigers running backs Tre Mason, Corey Grant and Cameron Artis-Payne running through an Aggies defense that lost playmakers keeps Johnny Football on the sidelines too long to make this game a blowout. Texas A&M 42, Auburn 35

Ohio State -17 vs. Iowa

Joe’s pick It’s weekends like these that Urban Meyer is reminded how easy he’s got it made these days. Ohio State 42, Iowa 15
Pro’s pick Buckeyes defense has trouble with spread offenses that possess playmakers, but Hawkeyes run a pro set offense and can score only on lower-level defenses. Iowa also on a morbid 1-6 ATS run as an underdog. Ohio State 37, Iowa 13

Florida -3 vs. Missouri

Joe’s pick Predicting the ugliest game of the college football season, and that’s saying something considering the Gators have already offered up some stinkers. UF 21, Missouri 15
Pro’s pick The Gators defense is quick enough to contain Tigers speed and force at least two turnovers. Missouri lost their star QB James Franklin last week and don’t have enough experience to last four quarters with this heavyweight. Florida 28, Missouri 17

LSU -8 vs. Mississippi

Joe’s pick Mad Hatter understands the importance of this game now that Ole Miss finally has a coach who can recruit with LSU. LSU 42, Mississippi 17
Pro’s pick After an injury free 2012, Ole Miss defense has been decimated by injuries and has given up 30 PPG and 5 YPC to their five Division I opponents. Katy Bar The Door! LSU 45, Mississippi 16

Stanford -6 vs. UCLA

Joe’s pick Gotta hunch the Bruins pull the upset. I have no evidence or argument to support this hunch. UCLA 25, Stanford 24
Pro’s pick Bruins QB Brett Hundley will have to be at his best without RB Jordan James. Cardinal offense ran for 221 and 284 yards in both 2012 victories against overmatched UCLA defense. Stanford 31 UCLA 21

Notre Dame -3 vs. USC

Joe’s pick Speaking of YouTube, after watching those highlights of Jameis Winston, do a search for the Ed Orgeron song in honor of USC’s new interim coach. USC 27, Notre Dame 25
Pro’s pick A rah-rah coach like USC interim boss Ed Orgeron usually runs out of gas after one week. Irish offense might employ backup QB often to run the zone read option, which has been the Trojans’ soft underbelly for two-plus seasons. Notre Dame 30, USC 24
