College football: Joe vs. the Pro, Week 13

BY JOSEPH GOODMAN

November 22, 2012 07:17 PM

We really hope someone is making money off the Pro’s picks. The guy is so hot he might explode into flame like a too-full turkey fryer.

The Pro, Lee Sterling of ParamountSports.com, went 4-4 straight up last week and 5-2-1 against the spread. For the season, the Pro is 69-27 straight up and a preposterous 51-38-2.

It’s probably going to take an eight-game parlay in consecutive weeks for Joe to catch the Pro. Joseph Goodman, the Herald’s college football columnist, went 5-3 straight up last week and 3-4-1 against the spread. For the season, Joe is 68-28 straight up and a respectable 46-43-2 against the spread.

This week’s picks:

South Florida at Cincinnati (Cincinnati by 13)

Joe: South Florida hasn’t been this bad since the inception of the program. Skip Holtz’s nightmare season is almost over, thankfully. Cincinnati 35, USF 15

Pro: After scoring 30 plus points in their last three games, the Bearcats laid an egg last week in their showdown vs. Rutgers. Cincinnati should bounce back versus a Bulls’ pass defense ranked No. 96. Cincinnati 34, USF 14

Michigan at Ohio State (Ohio State by 3.5)

Joe: Urban Meyer will finish his first season at Ohio State with an undefeated season. National Coach of the Year? Gators fans cringe at the thought. Ohio State 31, Michigan 28

Pro: Bucks look to avenge loss to Wolves from last year. Bucks no better in the land 12-0 SU and 11-1 ATS avenging a conference loss. This is their bowl and championship game all rapped in one. Ohio State 31 Michigan 23

Georgia Tech at Georgia (UGA by 13)

Joe: Georgia can play for a national championship if it wins out. A classic trap game for Mark Richt. Georgia 28, Georgia Tech 20

Pro: Perfect scheduling set up for Dawgs last week as they faced the triple option of Georgia Southern. You stop the triple option with a physical front seven and Dawgs are physical with a capital “P”. Georgia 45, Georgia Tech 24

Miami at Duke (Miami by 6)

Joe: Tip of the hat to Al Golden, who has kept spirits as high as possible amid so much disappointment. Miami 42, Duke 30

Pro: Canes QB Stephen Morris is holding a hot hand after tossing for 413 yards and three touchdowns last week vs. South Florida. Duke has allowed an average of 49 points per game after reaching six wins. Miami 45, Duke 35

Florida at Florida State (FSU by 8)

Joe: Gators luck runs out in a big way. Florida State 38, Florida 18

Pro: Both teams can sure play some defense. Each unit is ranked between No. 1 and No. 6 in every major statistical category. One team can score. Noles have 200-51 point edge in lined home games while Gators put up just 9 and 14 points vs. its last two BCS opponents. Florida State 27, Florida 6

South Carolina at Clemson (Clemson by 4)

Joe: This should be one of the games of the year. I feel like Dabo Swinney could be Steve Spurrier’s long lost son. Clemson 25, South Carolina 21

Pro: Gamecocks not the same on offense without Marcus Lattimore and now star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney isn’t 100 percent with a toe injury. Tigers’ offense clicking on all cylinders scoring 42 points per game in its last four games and appear Sugar Bowl bound with victory. Clemson 38, South Carolina 31

Notre Dame at Southern Cal (Notre Dame by 6)

Joe: USC backup quarterback Max Wittek predicted an upset. I predict he gets knocked out of the game. Notre Dame 25, USC 15

Pro: Trojan quarterback Matt Barkley out but his loss not as great as most are led to believe because he’s tossed 15 interceptions this season. USC owns series 9-1 straight up and 7-3 against the spread and sets stage for a possible all-SEC national title game. USC 28, Notre Dame 27

Louisiana-Monroe at Florida International (ULM by 6)

Joe: I don’t know anything about the Warhawks other than they have a great mascot and they score a lot of points. FIU is ready for the offseason. ULM 45, FIU 20

Pro: One team, FIU, is happy to retain Don Shula trophy with hard-fought win over FAU last week while Warhawks about to go bowling for the first time in school history. ULM 31, FIU 21
