College football: Joe vs. The Pro, Week 2

Joe and The Pro began the season in the black. Surprisingly, Joe is off to a good start while Lee Sterling proved why he’s The Pro of this weekly feature. Lee Sterling of, the pro analyst of this feature, went 7-1 straight up and 4-1 against the spread in Week 1 of the college football season. Joe, The Herald’s national college football writer, was 8-0 straight up and 3-2 against the spread. Lee went with Duke over FIU while Joe also picked the Blue Devils.

Miami at Kansas State, Kansas State by 7

Joe’s pick Missouri State racked up more than 400 yards of offense against Arthur Brown’s Kansas State defense last week. That means there’s plenty of film for Al Golden to devise a balanced game plan around Duke Johnson and Stephen Morris. Miami 35, Kansas State 31
Pro’s pick The Hurricanes’ defensive line is not strong enough at the point of attack and has zero pass rush. Miami has young talent. Wildcats have mature talent that might lead them to a BCS bowl. Kansas State 31, Miami 21

South Florida at Nevada, Nevada by 1

Joe’s pick Bulls’ defensive line enjoys the dry heat. South Florida 28, Nevada 27
Pro’s pick If Nevada wins this game talk will start about the Wolfpack possibly running the table. Nevada coach Chris Ault is 24-10 ATS as a home favorite. Quarterback Cody Fajardo is more consistent than Bulls quarterback B.J. Daniels. Nevada 27, South Florida 24

Savannah State at Florida State, No line

Joe’s pick Is Florida State ever going to play anybody? Can ESPN please stop showing College GameDay promos featuring Jimbo Fisher? They’re terrible. Florida State 56, Savannah State 3
Pro’s pick When a Division I team backs out of a contract this is the type of opponent you play. The most important stat will be if the Seminoles lose another player to injury. Florida State 55, Savannah State 0

Florida at Texas A&M, Texas A&M by 2

Joe’s pick Speaking of ESPN College GameDay, they’re heading to College Station this weekend for the Aggies’ first conference game in the SEC. Somebody gag me. Texas A&M 25, Florida 21
Pro’s pick Playing a game while the Aggies sat because of Hurricane Isaac can only help UF quarterback Jeff Driskel settle in to outduel first-time Aggies starter Johnny Manziel. Florida 27, Texas A&M 20

Central Florida at Ohio State, Ohio State by 17

Joe’s pick Speaking of ESPN College GameDay again could we please have another feature on Urban Meyer’s messed-up family life. I want to gag some more. Ohio State 42, Central Florida 21
Pro’s pick The Knights have the athletes to slow down Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller. New UCF starting quarterback Blake Bortles has the deeper and more talented running backs and wide receivers to take this game deep into the fourth quarter. Ohio State 34, Central Florida 20

Akron at FIU, FIU by 23

Joe’s pick If I learned anything after the first week of the season, it’s that Terry Bowden has let himself go since his days at Auburn. FIU 35, Akron 15
Pro’s pick Fumbling punts, errant field-goal snaps and allowing long pass plays last week were out of character. But 1,000-yard rusher Kedrick Rhodes leads ground attack against defenseless Zips. FIU 45, Akron 13

Florida Atlantic at Middle Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee by 7

Joe’s pick The masochist in me can’t wait for this game. FAU scored a whole touchdown against Wagner last week while Middle Tennessee lost to McNeese State. Middle Tennessee 21, FAU 10
Pro’s pick Banged-up Blue Raiders running back Benny Cunningham and teammates will have tough sledding with Owls linebackers Andre Kirk and David Hinds on top of their game. Middle Tennessee 20, FAU 16

Georgia at Missouri, Georgia by 3

Joe’s pick No clue here after Georgia’s defense allowed nearly 200 yards rushing against Buffalo. Thanks to the Internet, I am absolutely certain that Mark Richt somehow resembles Helen Hunt. Georgia 28, Missouri 24
Pro’s pick Poor run defense, poor pass blocking by the offensive tackles and a new kicker and punter will hold back a talented but erratic Georgia team. Missouri 27, Georgia 26
