More than 200 Broward County high schools students gathered early Wednesday at the Signature Grand in Davie for the final phase of their quest to win a prestigious Silver Knight award.
The nerve-wracking judging interview — where the nominees are each quizzed by a panel of three judges — is considered the crucial aspect of the process, said Lisa Bowser, one of the organizers. "This is the most important day of the process for these students," Bowser said.
The first school group to arrive was from North Broward Preparatory School. "We're nervous but we're ready," said the group's college advisor Karen Siegel.
Silvia Larrieu, head of marketing for The Miami Herald , told the judges they were in for a rewarding day. "You will meet some wonderful young people today," Larrieu said.

In categories ranging from general scholarship, to mathematics to world languages, students were rated on achievement, service and leadership.
The interviews will go on for the rest of the day.
The judging for Miami-Dade Silver Knights will be April 18. Winners will be announced May 22.
