Denied the vote

The Aug. 23 letter, “Voting-rights bias” takes the Miami Herald to task for publishing what the writer says is a biased story about how Florida disenfranchises former felons by denying them the right to vote for life.

But she reveals her own bias when she laments that when that right is restored, ex-felons tend to vote Democratic, which is true. She fails to acknowledge the dubious morality of denying them the right forever, regardless how they might have voted.

Statistics show that the rate of recidivism drops substantially when former felons’ right to vote is restored. It is more beneficial to taxpayers if they are educated rather than incarcerated.
