Desperate refugees

It is shameful that police used Tasers on refugees arriving from Cuba. Didn’t they risk their lives and suffer enough during the voyage? The actions of the Dania Police are not the image that Lady Liberty conveys.

These presumptive exiles were desperate to arrive on our shores, and anyone should understand that, in their frustration and suffering, they were only showing the authorities that they would rather die than be returned. Hence the knives pointed at their own stomachs.

This is a contrast to when my brother and I arrived in Miami in 1960. The Customs agent did the cursory inspection and said, “Welcome to the United States.” Those words will always remain in my heart.

Francisco J. Jiménez,

Kendall
